Garden Mindset: A 4-Part Hands-On Garden Series
Garden Mindset: A 4-Part Hands-On Garden Series
We're not teaching you how to garden our way. We're teaching you how to understand your garden.
What if gardening wasn't about memorizing what to plant, when to plant it, or what someone says you should do?
What if you learned how to actually read your land, observe your plants, work with the seasons, and understand what's happening beneath your feet?
Garden Mindset is a hands-on, four-part learning experience at La Fea Farms designed to help you develop the confidence to understand your own growing space.
Each class stands on its own, so you can start with one. Together, the four classes take you on a journey:
Understand → Experience → Continue → Discover
Meet Your Teacher
BRAD JONES
Brad, one of the Co-Founders of The Kitchen House, brings his years of experience in gardening to Garden Mindset.
Through hands-on teaching and real-world experience, Brad will guide you through the four-part series—from understanding your property and starting seeds to working with the seasons and discovering the living world of compost and soil.
But this isn't about giving you a rigid set of instructions to follow.
It's about learning how to observe, ask questions, understand what's happening, and make decisions for your own garden.
You'll learn directly from Brad while working with the land, seeds, plants, seasons, soil, and compost.
This isn't just a class you sit through. It's an experience you participate in.

PART 1: UNDERSTAND YOUR PLACE
Where are you going to grow?
Before you plant anything, learn to understand the land you're standing on.
Florida is a unique growing environment, and your own property has its own patterns of sun, shade, water, and possibilities.
You'll learn how to observe:
-
Sun and shade
-
North and South orientation
-
Water flow and drainage
-
Potential garden locations
-
Raised-bed possibilities
-
Food forest opportunities
-
Existing features that can work with your garden
Hands-On Experience
You'll walk and observe the property with your teacher, identify growing opportunities, and begin seeing your land differently.
You'll create your own personal property site map.
You'll Leave With
A site map of your property showing potential growing areas and things to observe before making changes.
The goal isn't to leave with a finished garden plan.
The goal is to leave knowing where you could begin.
PART 2: EXPERIENCE THE SEED
From seed to seedling
Now that you have begun to understand where you're growing, it's time to experience the beginning of the growing process for yourself.
A seed may look simple, but once you put it in the soil, an entire conversation begins.
How much moisture does it need?
Does it have enough light?
When should you move it?
What is that tiny change telling you?
You'll explore:
-
Seeds and germination
-
Moisture and light
-
Containers
-
Seed starting
-
Seedling care
-
When to transplant
-
How to observe what plants need
The goal isn't simply to make a seed sprout.
It's learning how to notice what the plant is telling you.
Hands-On Experience
You'll start your own seeds and learn what to watch for as they develop into seedlings.
You'll Leave With
-
Seeds you've started yourself
-
Seedling-care resources
-
A better understanding of what to observe
-
Confidence to continue growing at home
The goal:
"I know what my seed needs, and I know what to look for."
Not:
"I followed the instructions."
PART 3: CONTINUE WITH THE SEASONS
Your garden is an advent calendar.
Gardening isn't something you do once.
Every day opens another little door.
A seed germinates.
A flower appears.
A fruit begins forming.
A pest shows up.
The weather changes.
Something fails.
Something surprises you.
Something is ready to harvest.
You don't know exactly what each day will reveal—but you keep showing up to see what's behind the next door.
In this class, you'll learn how to work with Florida's seasons instead of fighting them.
You'll explore:
-
Florida's unique growing seasons
-
Why Florida's garden calendar is different
-
What changes as the seasons shift
-
When to start seeds
-
When to transplant
-
How long plants take to mature
-
How to work with weather
-
How to keep observing and adjusting
Hands-On Experience
You'll work directly in the garden and begin putting everything you've learned into practice.
You'll create a seasonal garden plan based on your own space, season, and goals.
You'll Leave With
-
A seasonal garden plan
-
Seed and plant list
-
Shopping list
-
Planting timeline
-
Something you've planted or worked with
-
The confidence to keep going
The lesson isn't:
"Now you know how to garden."
It's:
"Now you know how to keep learning from your garden."
PART 4: UNDERSTAND YOUR SOIL
What's happening underneath it all?
A garden doesn't begin above the ground.
It begins underneath it.
Now that you've explored your place, experienced the seed, and learned to work with the seasons, it's time to go deeper.
Learn to see soil and compost as living systems, and begin understanding what is happening beneath your plants.
You'll explore:
-
Soil vs. dirt
-
What plants need from soil
-
Organic matter
-
Decomposition
-
Compost
-
Moisture
-
Soil structure
-
How compost is created
-
How to observe soil before trying to "fix" it
Hands-On Experience
You'll work directly with soil and compost rather than simply hearing about them.
You'll also learn how to measure and observe temperature and understand what it can tell you about decomposition and growing conditions.
Instead of simply being told what temperature something should be, you'll learn to measure, observe, and ask why.
You'll Leave With
-
Compost you've participated in creating
-
A better understanding of how healthy soil develops
-
Resources for continuing at home
-
A way to observe and measure your own growing environment
You'll begin asking:
"What is my soil telling me?"
instead of:
"What does someone say I should put on it?"
THE GARDEN MINDSET
The four classes create a natural progression:
UNDERSTAND
Where am I?
Your place, property, climate, and possibilities.
↓
EXPERIENCE
What can I start?
Seeds, seedlings, observation, and the beginning of growth.
↓
CONTINUE
What happens next?
Seasons, weather, timing, observation, and adapting as you go.
↓
DISCOVER
What's happening underneath it all?
Soil, compost, decomposition, and the living system that supports your garden.
What You'll Take Home
The take-home item is never the point.
It's evidence of what you learned and experienced.
You'll create things you can continue using at home:
🌱 Your site map — evidence that you learned to see your property.
🌿 Your seedlings — evidence that you learned how to start something and observe what it needs.
📅 Your seasonal garden plan — evidence that you're ready to continue.
♻️ Your compost experience — evidence that you experienced the process of building healthy soil.
The goal isn't to simply send you home with a plant, a garden plan, or a bag of compost.
The goal is to send you home with a different way of seeing your garden.
More Than a Gardening Class
Garden Mindset isn't about giving you a perfect formula.
Because your garden isn't exactly like anyone else's.
Your soil is different.
Your sunlight is different.
Your space is different.
Your weather is different.
Your plants will surprise you.
So instead of teaching you one "right" way to garden, we're giving you the tools to observe, understand, experiment, and respond.
We're not teaching you how to garden our way.
We're teaching you how to understand your garden.
Because once you understand your place, your plants, your seasons, and your soil, you can begin to:
Grow with the land instead of simply trying to grow on it.
And we're still learning too.
We continue learning alongside our teachers, our mentors, one another, and the land itself.
That's part of the Garden Mindset.
